The tunnel’s end: Wuhan lifts its lockdown

터널의 끝 : 우한이 봉쇄를 해제하다

 

The news that broke while China slept on January 23rd was astonishing: the government had quarantined an entire city at the centre of a mysterious new viral outbreak.

중국이 1월 23일에 활동을 멈췄던 동안 발표된 기사는 놀라웠다 : 중국 정부가 수상한 신종 바이러스의 발발의 중심지에 있는 어느 도시 전체를 격리한 것이다.

 

At midnight, that city ─ Wuhan ─ finally emerged from lockdown, even as much of the world now looks the way it did during the past 76 days.

오늘도 전 세계의 상당 수가 지난 76일동안 중국의 모습과 같은 상황에, 우한 시는 자정 무렵 봉쇄에서 풀려났다.

Nearly 4bn people, half the global population, have been asked to stay at home to slow the covid-19 pandemic.

거의 40억에 달하는 전 세계 인구에 절반의 사람들이 Covid-19의 전염을 늦추고자 외출 금지를 실행하길 요청 받아왔다.

 

The government’s decision to let Wuhan’s residents travel again comes after it all but eliminated the virus there, with just two new infections reported in the past two weeks.

지난 2주간 단 두명의 감염자만 발생했기에, 우한 시에 있는 거의 모든 바이러스를 제거했다고 말하며 중국 정부는 우한 시민들의 이동을 다시 허가했다.

 

But life is far from normal.

하지만 정상적인 삶과는 거리가 멀다.

 

China’s external borders remain almost entirely shut as the government worries that the virus could come roaring back from abroad.

중국 정부가 바이러스가 해외로부터 다시 유입되는 것을 우려하기 때문에, 중국의 국경은 거의 대부분 닫혀있다.

 

Temperature checkpoints still blanket the country.

체온 측정 구역은 여전히 전역을 뒤덮고 있다.

 

And Wuhan’s scars from two months of suffering and anxiety will take time to heal.

또한 우한 시민들의 지난 두 달 동안의 불안과 고통의 상처들은 치료되기까지 시간이 걸릴 것이다.
